Sergio Ramos: “Winning a fifth Champions League would be crazy. That's why I make sacrifices. To win another European Championship or World Cup would be unique. Even a Ballon d'Or as well, and that's why I fight every day. I feel I'm capable to continue for several more years.”

Rainwater-driven microbial fuel cells for power generation in remote areas
-by Thamarasee Jeewandara , Phys.org
Work highlighted the significant influence of the rainwater season under anaerobic conditions, where summer rainwater achieved an open circuit potential (OCP) of 553 ± 2 mV, without the addition of nutrients at ambient temperature. Addition of nutrients further increased the cell voltage. The team obtained the maximum open circuit potential for winter rainwater by exposing the reactor to air (aerobic conditions) at ambient temperature.
The resulting rainwater microbial fuel cell (RMFC) generated a maximum power output of 7 ± 0.1 mWm-2 at a corresponding current density value of 44 ± 0.7 mAm-2 at 30 degrees Celsius. The scientists obtained the maximum output power at ambient temperature with summer rainwater. During summer, Lactobacillus spp. formed the dominant electroactive genus, while Staphylococcus spp. dominated the winter rainwater. The cyclic voltammetry analysis confirmed how electrons could be delivered directly from the bacterial biofilm to the anode surface, without any mediators to open a new avenue for sustainable rainwater-based microbial fuel cells (RMFCs).
Converting chemical energy into electricity in a microbial fuel cell (MFC)
A microbial fuel cell system provides a setup for microorganisms to convert chemical energy embedded in some organic compounds to electricity by oxidizing these compounds into ATPs (adenosine triphosphate) through sequential reactions. The MFCs differed from other types of fuel cells since living organisms can act as a catalyst to organize organic materials present at the anode chamber. The process of MFC development provides a clean, reliable and efficient process, without any toxic byproducts. While the energy produced by MFCs is relatively low, it could gain energy from several types of wastes naturally present in diverse environments for direct conversion into electricity. In remote areas, MFCs are therefore considered a convenient power-generating device for wireless sensors. Rainwater contains a variety of microorganisms collected from the atmosphere, with ample evidence for microbial activity in the air. Fresh rainwater samples contain a wide phylogenetic variety including genomic sequences such as Alphaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteriodetes and Lentisphaerae. The presence of diverse microorganisms motivated the scientist to study the possibility of generating electricity using rainwater microbial fuel cells (RMFC) due to their ability to metabolize organic and inorganic components. In this work, Amen et al. investigated two different rainwater samples based on sample collecting season to generate electricity through a single chamber air-cathode MFC. The results surprisingly provided a promising power output from a relatively high-quality atmosphere.

Champions League 1st legs
Manchester City’s victory in the Bernabeu bucked the trend of unfavourable results for English teams in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The 1st legs, played over the last two weeks, saw English teams lose 3 out of the 4 ties - despite the press waxing lyrical about the current strength of the Premier League.
Liverpool returned to the venue where they were crowned European Champions only 9 months ago - only to be defeated by a typically resilient Atletico Madrid. Tottenham also lost, at home to RB Leipzig, who are one of the main players in this year’s Bundesliga title race. Although the score was only 1-0, Spurs were totally outplayed, despite Mourinho’s prickly protestations.
And that leads us on to Chelsea. Although it wasn’t quite 7-2, they received a battering at the hands of Bayern Munich at home. Looking objectively, it’s not that surprising. Lampard is a young and inexperienced manager and lots of Chelsea’s players will not have played in a game of this magnitude. A small crumb of comfort for them is that Lewandowski will miss the second leg. However, when you’ve got people like Coutinho coming off the bench, I don’t think Lampard and Chelsea will sleep any easier.
But the story of the round is undoubtedly cITEH. Before the game, twitter and various journos were peddling conspiracy theories about how UEFA are out to get them - given the ban the oil funded club recently received from the Champions League. Plus, they were about to play UEFA darlings and serial cheats Real Madrid - who are one of the clubs UEFA are looking to protect from City, despite them winning 4x as many European Cups than City have reached semi-finals since the Sheikh took over at Eastland. Surely the stage was set for City to be cheated out of their birthright?
However, the reality was quite different. Gabriel Jesus’ clear push on Sergio Ramos went unpunished as he headed past Thiabut Courtois to level the tie after Isco had given Real the lead. Then cITEH were awarded a penalty which Kevin De Bruyne duly dispatched.
Then, the incident that will well and truly put the conspiracy theories to bed. Sergio Ramos was sent off for a trip on Gabriel Jesus. With Ramos missing the second leg, City must be overwhelming favourites to go through.
So no doubts cITEH’s calm and rational fans will view this as them ‘getting one over on the establishment’. The reality was that this result in fact proves there are no conspiracies and that it’s only their unwarranted sense of entitlement that makes them feel that they have been aggrieved in any way shape or form over the past few weeks.
As expected, City have appealed to the CAS over their ban. Let’s hope they don’t get off scott free.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane challenged his side to achieve even more this season after retaining their FIFA Club World Cup title with a 1-0 win over Brazilian side Gremio in Abu Dhabi. A superb free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock after 53 minutes, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner clipping the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner. The hard-earned victory over a stubborn Gremio team at the Zayed Sports City Stadium was Real’s third FIFA Club World Cup since 2014, equalling the record of LaLiga rivals Barcelona. . . . . . #zinedinezidane #zidane #zinedine #cfrealmadrid #rmfc #realmadridfamily #realmadridfarsi #realmadridindia #realmadridcf #realmadrid #rmcf #realmadridfc (at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu)

With Juan Mata out of contract next summer, Real Madrid are poised to make an offer for the Manchester United midfielder, according to the Daily Express. The 29-year-old was left out of the team for United’s trip to Chelsea at the weekend, fuelling speculation the Spanish club could make a bid for their former youth player in the January transfer window. . . . . . #juanmata #juanmatagarcia #manchesterunited #manchesterunitedfc #manutd #manunited #manutdfans #mufcfamily #mufcfans #manutdfans #manutdforever #manutdfc #cfrealmadrid #rmfc #realmadridfamily #realmadridfarsi #realmadridindia #realmadridcf #realmadrid #rmcf #realmadridfc (at Old Trafford)

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone insists LaLiga leaders Barcelona are still not as good as Real Madrid. Barcelona visit Atletico’s new Wanda Metropolitano home for the first time on Saturday night with a five-point lead over second-placed Sevilla. Ernesto Valverde’s table-toppers have opened their campaign with seven straight wins. Barcelona are six points clear of fourth-placed Atletico and seven ahead of champions Real, who have made a stuttering start to the season. But Atletico boss Simeone told a pre-match press conference: “Barcelona are one of the best teams in the world, but Real Madrid are better now. (Barca) Have reinvented themselves after the departure of Neymar. They do not stop wanting to win. They have a winning gene, they do not get tired.” Atletico have not beaten Barcelona in 14 league games – a run stretching back to February 2010. Simeone has lost eight of his 11 league games since his appointment in December 2011, but he insists Atletico have always done themselves justice in the fixture. “We have not beaten Barcelona in the league, but we’ve always played well against them,” Simeone said. “We tied the most important one, that was the one that gave us LaLiga (in 2013-14) and we have knocked them out twice in the Champions League.” . . . . . #diegosimeone #simeone #atleticomadrid #atleticodemadrid #fcbarcelona #fcb #barcelonafc #laliga #laligabbva #ligabbva #fcbfans #barca #barcafans #barcafamily #cfrealmadrid #rmfc #realmadridfamily #realmadridfarsi #realmadridindia #realmadridcf (at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium)

Luis Figo believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s return from a five-match ban can help kick-start Real Madrid’s season. After seven games, the defending champions are fifth in LaLiga, seven points behind their rivals Barcelona. Ronaldo has served his five-match suspension after pushing the referee in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup in August and Figo feels his return can get Madrid’s season back on track. “Of course, he’s a very important player for the team,” Figo said. “He was out five games and the team missed his goals and his contribution. “Now everything is settled and I think the team is going for the goals they had in the beginning of the season. “They started well, they won two competitions (the Supercopa and UEFA Super Cup) and now in the league they’re trying to come back from some draws and (recover) some points to Barcelona. “The season is long, to win the league you have to be really consistent. Of course, all the teams have their ups and downs and I’m looking forward to seeing Madrid in the top (places).” . . . . . #cristiano #cristianoronaldo #cristianoronaldo7 #ronaldo7 #cfrealmadrid #rmfc #realmadridfamily #realmadridfarsi #realmadridindia #realmadridcf #pl #premierleague #laliga #laligabbva #luisfigo (at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu)
